Being A Grandparent And Raising Your Grandchild

Are you one of the many Grandparents that are raising your grandchild? Maybe you have one, two or three siblings that you are raising? I am one of those grandparents. Along with my husband we are raising two of our twelve grandchildren, a boy who is 13 and a girl who is 8. We have had these children in our care for the last two years. We are also in the process of adopting both of them for the last 16 months. Let me tell you trying, to adopt a child that is already part of your family I think is harder than if you were to adopt a total stranger. Especially when you are adopting from one state to another. Sometimes you find that the states do not talk to each other. Each state has there own rules and regulations. There are mounds and mounds of paperwork. I have paperwork coming out my ears. I also have a couple of boxes full of paperwork. I keep every piece of paper make copies of everything. It is filed in envelopes and then filed in storage box. Everything is labeled

So you are saying to yourself “What does this have to do with the price of tea in China”. Well I am going to try and make things a little easier for another grandparent to find the information that they need to help them get custody, find financial help, medical help and support groups in their areas. A starting point if you will.

I will try to help you decide if you want to adopt your grandchild or do you just want to have guardianship. What the differences means? It is a hard decision to make. Some of the questions you must ask yourself are you ready to start another family? There are issues with school. You will have to go to the teacher conferences help with homework. Are you ready for this? Are you ready to teach your grandchild how to drive a car? Then there is the question of insurance? Then there is college, will there be money for college? Are you ready for to be the disciplinarian. Are you ready for dating? Then there is the peer pressure your child will be going through with the alcohol and drugs. Maybe this is the reason you have your child or children with you. How do you explain the death of a parent if that parent is deceased? Will that child blame you for everything they are going through? Will you be able to handle how will this affect your health? How will this affect your income? What happens if something happens to you?
